Public servant couple, 4 kids including twins

Dec 10th, 2009, 9:05 am

Dear Sir / Madam

My husband and I both earn approx €85,000 as public sector workers.

We have three children 3 and under -incl twins (and one on the way) so get child benefit for 4….

Child care costs are about €2500 a month and we bought in 2007!! (based on current salaries!)

Approx how much worse off are we

Thank you, Emma

 Emma

The public sector pay cuts will be implemented on a progressive basis for salaries under €125,000.  A gross salary of €85,000 will be reduced to €79,000.  On the basis that your husband earns the same amount; after tax these reductions should result in a reduction of approximately €115 per week in your joint pay.

Child benefit has been reduced by €16 per child. Your child benefit will therefore be reduced by €64 per month.

There have been no changes to mortgage interest relief, except in the case of those who are affected by negative equity.  In cases of negative equity, when mortgage interest relief was due to expire in 2010 or later, it will be extended to 2017.
