The Minister for Education says he “regrets” that he cannot honour his pre-election pledge not to increase college registration fees.

It has been confirmed that students will have to pay an extra €250 per year.

This is despite assurances before the election that college registration fees would not go up.

A number of protests had been held by students to try and ensure this did not happen.

Ruairi Quinn says it was a difficult decision.
