Israel and Hamas militants have stopped fighting in Gaza temporarily.

They've agreed to a 12-hour truce on humanitarian grounds.

But there were explosions right up until it began at 7am local time - with reports Israeli tank shelling killed 18 members of the same Palestinian family.

Foreign ministers from around the world are meeting in Paris today to push for a more permanent ceasefire in Gaza.

More than 800 Palestinians and 35 Israelis have died since the conflict started on the 8th of July.

The US Secretary of State John Kerry says they're close to reaching a deal.

He told a news conference in Cairo a "fundamental framework" for peace was in place and that it would "ultimately succeed".

"The world is watching tragic moment after tragic moment unfold and is wondering when everybody is going to come to their senses," said Mr Kerry.

An unnamed source from the Israeli government said they were seeking modifications as the truce proposal "leans too much towards Hamas demands".

Speaking alongside Mr Kerry, UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said there had been "tireless efforts" to bring both sides to the table, and that the people of Gaza have "bled enough".

Meanwhile, demonstrations will be held at a number of locations across the country, as Irish people protest against the ongoing hostilities in Gaza.

Several thousand people attended the country’s largest protest in Dublin last Saturday.

Today's march in Dublin will start at 2pm at the Spire on O'Connell Street and the demonstration in Cork starts at Daunt Square at 1pm.
