Cheryl Cole’s much-hyped debut solo performance on the X Factor helped the show pull in a record audience of 15 million.

The ratings eclipsed that of last year’s final and represented a 50 per cent share of the audience.

Rival BBC show, Strictly Come Dancing which moved time slot to compete with the X Factor managed only eight million viewers.
