Chart battles such as Alexandra Burke versus Robbie Williams have helped 2009 become the biggest year ever for UK singles sales.

Recorded music body the BPI says 117 million singles have already been sold in Britain this year.

That beats the previous all-time record of 115.1 million, set in 2008.

Lady Gaga has the top two best-selling singles of the year so far – with Poker
Face first and Just Dance second.
