Environment Minister has high hopes for agreement

Dec 15th, 2009, 12:09 pm

A fresh draft for an agreement on climate change has been issued at the UN talks in Copenhagen.

However it’s believed there’s still some disagreement on all the main issues.

UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon – who will address delegates this evening – says rich and poor countries must “stop pointing fingers” – and raise their targets.

Environment Minister John Gormley is in Copenhagen.

“We would hope that by the time the Heads of State arrive that most of the agreement would be put in place” he said.

“That may be being overly optimistic, but I still believe it’s achievable”.

“The most important thing is that we get the big players, namely China and the United States, on-board so that we can have a legally binding agreement” he added.
