IMF says Ireland is a patient, not a criminal

The International Monetary Fund is not likely to take over the running of the country’s finances.

Since the economic collapse some commentators have suggested the IMF could step in, if order’s not restored to the country’s finances.

However the Director of External Relations with the IMF says the organisation views itself as a “doctor with a patient, rather than police “with a criminal”.

And Caroline Atkinson told Newstalk Breakfast it would be hard to imagine intervening in Ireland’s affairs.

“We don’t have a critical list of countries – we wait for countries to ask us” she said.

“I hope Ireland would be interested in our advice, hard for me to imagine that they would be wanting our money” she added.
