A huge dust storm has blanketed Sydney in Australia shrouding the city in a red glow.

One resident has described it like waking up on Mars.

International flights had to be diverted, ferries were suspended and health authorities urged people to stay indoors.

The dust storm swept across the east of the country blacking out the outback town of Broken Hill.
