Ahern says FIFA 'hypocritical' over match decision

Nov 20th, 2009, 12:43 pm

The Justice Minister has accused FIFA of “being hypocritical” following a decision by the body not to replay the Ireland France World Cup qualifier.

Football’s World governing body insists decisions taken by the referee during matches are final.

The controversy surrounds Thierry Henry’s handball to set up the decisive French goal.

Speaking in Templemore this afternoon, Justice Minister Dermot Ahern – an avid football fan – said it’s disappointing.

“Well, I have to say I think it’s hypocritical of them, because they did announce a replay before” he said.

“I think it’s a shame – but the shame is on them, not on us”.

“I think we come out of this with our heads high” he added.
