Audits examine FAS spending in more detail

Nov 19th, 2009, 10:39 am

The beleaguered state training agency for FAS is about to come under further scrutiny over spending by its former top brass.

23 audit reports have now been completed and one source claims they’ll reveal ‘another library of waste’.

It comes as the Public Accounts Committee says it’s struggling to cope with the number of complaints made about its courses.

Our reporter Chris Donoghue says these alleged grievances are particularly concerning.

“If you’re actually attacking the qualifications of FAS there’s trouble there” he said.

“It looks like  this was just a small pocket in the north-east and perhaps some courses in Waterford”.

“But the Public Accounts Committee has told me last night that they can’t keep up with the level of contact they’ve had from the members of the public, saying ‘I was in this course over in Galway, I was in this course in Dublin and I don’t think the awards were given out properly” he added.

He also told Breakfast here on Newstalk that the findings examine spending in a numbers of areas.

“This is into things like how the credit cards were used” he said.

“We already know of the top executives, the five top brass, the million euro club – they ran up a million between them on credit cards”.

“This will look into credit card usage, the exact details of what was put on to credit cards, how contracts were awarded for FAS tendering”.
