Enda Kenny’s call to abolish the Seanad has received the backing of the Fine Gael front bench.

He announced at the weekend he wants to scrap the upper house and would do so if he were elected Taoiseach.

It’s understood that some Fine Gael senators are still unhappy with the proposal.

Mr Kenny has also called for the reduction in the size of the Dáil and a review of the electoral system.
