Nov 21st, 2009, 6:42 pm

Voters say the Government should hike taxes for the more well off rather than cut public services in next months budget. A poll for the Sunday Business Post also shows a majority of people favour a cut in public service pay. The Red C poll finds that two-thirds of voters blame the government for the recession. And Less than a fifth of voters believe the current Government can lead us to economic recovery. But teh news isn’t much better for the Opposition – only 1 in 4 voters think a Fine Gael Labour Government could be trusted with the public finances. A majority of voters think public service pay should be cut, with people also favoring those with a household income above 100,000 paying higher taxes rather than cuts in spending on health, welfare and education. On party support Fine Gael extends its lead over Fianna Fail to 13 points – 36 to 23. The other main movers – Labour drop 2 to 17 while the Greens go up two to 5 per cent. Some lifestyle choices also emerged in this poll – 1 in 8 people have fallen into arrears on a loan or a mortgage in the past year, and Over a quarter of voters say they have visited the North to shop.
