The Labour party leader says he would be prepared to face down the unions in government if he felt it was necessary.
With a week to go to a national day of public sector strikes, Eamon Gilmore says he’s still opposed to industrial action as a way to resolve issues.
He says the public service pay bill must be reduced – but the cuts must be achieved through talks.
Eamon Gilmore says union leaders have a responsibility to their members.
“Trade union leaders have a responsibility to represent their members, and political parties have a responsibility to govern and provide political leadership – two very distinct functions” he said.
When asked in government if he would face them down, the Labour leader replied “If necessary yes”.
