IMF says Ireland is a patient, not a criminal

Dec 4th, 2009, 10:09 am

The International Monetary Fund is not likely to take over the running of the country’s finances.

Since the economic collapse some commentators have suggested the IMF could step in, if order’s not restored to the country’s finances.

However the Director of External Relations with the IMF Caroline Atkinson told Newstalk Breakfast it would be hard to imagine intervening in Ireland’s affairs.

“We don’t have a critical list of countries – we wait for countries to ask us” she said.

“I hope Ireland  would be interested in our advice, hard for me to imagine that they would be wanting our money”.

“I find it very hard to imagine that Ireland would be in the position of asking for a loan from the IMF”.

“We give advice to many countries…we have been working very hard to learn the lessons from the past, and when we’re dealing with countries to focus on what is really critically important for them, and think of ourselves more as a doctor with a patient – and not a policeman with a criminal” she added.
