Lisbon set to become law soon

The Lisbon Treaty looks set to come into effect throughout the EU at the start of December.

Czech President Vaclav Klaus signed the accord today after his country’s constitutional court ruled it was in line with the Czech constitution.

The Czech Republic was the only country that had not yet ratified the treaty. Every single member state must agree before the treaty can come into force.

A statement on behalf of the European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso was read out in Brussels earlier today.

“I believe that no further unnecessary delays should prevent the entry into force of the Lisbon Treaty” the spokeswoman said.

“I hope that we can now move forward as quickly as possible on the nomination on the President of the European Council” the statement added.
