No need for further inquiries, says Bishop

Nov 27th, 2009, 10:04 am

An Auxiliary Bishop of Dublin says sees no need for further inquiries into child abuse in the Irish Catholic church, and resources should be spent elsewhere.

Eamon Walsh made his comments as the fallout continues from the Murphy report.

The document exposed 30 years of ‘denial, arrogance and cover-up’ of clerical abuse in the Dublin archdiocese.

Bishop Walsh was involved in a discussion with Maeve Lewis from One in Four on breakfast here on Newstalk.

“Well I think we have the full truth” the Bishop said.

Lewis replied “I don’t think we do, Bishop”.

“If they want to go and spend money and time finding out what they already know – we know the pattern in Ferns, we know the pattern in Dublin. The sample in Dublin showed exactly what happened” Walsh said.

“I would much prefer that we would put our money – scarce resources that we have as a country and as a church – into consolidating our services. That’s where I would like to see it go” he added.

Meanwhile, Bishop Walsh also says he doesn’t believe anyone covered up abuse to deliberately put children at risk.

The report points the finger of blame at four successive archbishops for their response to concerns over abuse allegations.

In a discussion with abuse victim Andrew Madden on Breakfast, Eamon Walsh insisted that it wasn’t deliberate.

“I don’t believe that any right person could put a child deliberately at risk” said Walsh.

“But…that’s what you’ve been doing for the last four or five decade” Madden replied.

The Bishop stated “I don’t believe anybody did that with that kind of intention”.

Madden then expressed his dismay, telling Bishop Walsh “That’s unbelievable”.
