The Minister for Transport has met with the state transport agencies on their plans, to ensure that commuters face the least disruption possible during the cold spell.
Noel Dempsey says local authorities are already treating roads and are prioritising critical access routes to the main national road network.
It comes as motorists face treacherous driving conditions in some parts of the country following showers of sleet and snow.
Road temperatures are reported to be still below zero in many areas and icy stretches and freezing fog will clear only slowly.
