A Limerick father-of-3 has told Breakfast here on Newstalk how he has had to close his family business of 121 years and emigrate to Australia because of the recession.
47-year-old Declan Murphy says he was forced to close Murphy and Son Menswear in Newcastle West.
The business first opened its doors in 1889.
He says he can no longer support his family with the business and has made the difficult decision to emigrate.
Speaking to Breakfast here on Newstalk he is adamant that he will never return to Ireland.
“We’re closing after 121 years; and that’s the end of a legacy, it’s the end of some fabulous history and it’s not something I ever wanted on my CV” he said.
“But I’ve got to look after my wife and 3 kids, I’ve 3 kids under the age of 6″.
“I just can’t support them – that’s the bottom line”.
“I’m not looking for a fancy life, I just want to look after my wife and kids – and I cannot do that now” he added.
