Halifax – the retail arm of Bank of Scotland Ireland – will close half of its branches at 5pm this evening.
The remainder are set to close next Wednesday.
Anyone with a Halifax credit card is being warned they will stop working from today.
Business journalist Mark Mortell explains.
“About 750 people are going to loose their jobs” he said.
“They had about 50,000 current account customers and about 50,000 credit card customers – all of those are now going to be affected”.
“They’ve been in regular contact with them”.
“At this stage those customers who have paid off their debts and so on are fine, but those that haven’t – they’re putting into special schemes to look after them at special rates” he added.
