Kellogg’s has pledged to cut the level of sugars in its best selling children’s cereal ‘Coco Pops’.
The move has been welcomed by health groups who claim that as a nation we eat the most cereal in the world.
The firm said that by this time next year it would remove 15% of sugar in all its Coco Pops cereals effectively reducing sugar content to one and a half teaspoons a serving.
Manager of the Nutrition and Health Foundation Dr. Muireann Cullen. has this advice for cereal fans.
“Rather than avoiding any foods – cause you know yourself if you avoid a food it’s the one thing you actually want – it’s about having that balance” she said.
“If somebody is concerned about the content of sugar or salt – or whatever it is – if you can avoid it; or you can then decide…if your child id going to have it in the morning or you’re going to have it yourself in the morning have it either as a while cereal itself but balance it out over the week then with other varieties of cereals and other varieties of breakfasts” she added.
