Live Register shows slower monthly increase

Sep 1st, 2010, 12:20 pm

The rate of increase in the Live Register slowed significantly last month.

New figures from the Central Statistics Office (CSO) reveal an additional 2,500 people signed on last month compared with a rise of 8,500 in July.

It means unemployment is now running at 13.8%.

Bur Brid O’Brien of the Irish National Organisation for the Unemployed says while the rate of increase is slowing down we still have more people on the Live Register than ever before.

“The reality is we have over 455,000 people on the seasonally adjusted Live Register” she said.

“That’s an extraordinary number of people”.

“Though the monthly increase is not as dramatic as last month, it’s still an extraordinary number of people for whom we have to find work” he added.
