Number in mortgage arrears increases, says Central Bank

Sep 1st, 2010, 12:22 pm

New figures from the Central Bank show the number of people in mortgage arrears is growing.

Almost 36,500 people have not paid their mortgage for 3 months or more.

That is 4,000 more people than the first 3 months of the year.

Personal Finance Editor with the Irish Independent Charlie Weston explains.

“There’s been a surge in the number of people who haven’t been able to pay their mortgage for 3 months or more” he said.

“Almost 36,500 people are now in arrears of 3 months or more on their mortgage – and…almost 25,000 of those haven’t paid for 6 months or more”.

“So yes there’s a real problem out there – there’s a mortgage crisis hitting the country” he added.
