Ryanair to close Belfast City base

Aug 31st, 2010, 1:51 pm

50 jobs are to go with the announcement by Ryanair that it is to close down its Belfast City Airport base at the end of October.

The airline says it has made the decision as a public inquiry into a promised runway extension will be further delayed.

Ryanair launched the base in Belfast in 2007 and operates 5 routes to Britain from there.

It means services to London Stansted, Liverpool, East Midlands, Bristol and Glasgow Prestwick will be withdrawn.

Staff will be offered relocation to other parts of European operations by Ryanair.

The decision will mean the loss of around 1 million passengers annually and the airline says its decision will cause the loss of 1,000 support jobs at Belfast City Airport.

A spokeswoman for the airport says she is extremely disappointed but confident of attracting other airlines to fill the void.
