Defoe sends Spurs into fifth round

Feb 3rd, 2010, 10:09 pm

A Jermaine Defoe hat-trick has put Tottenham into the fifth round of the FA Cup after a 3-1 win over at battling Leeds side at Elland Road. Spurs made-up for their failure to see-out their first encounter by dominating their hosts and deservedly took the lead in the 37th minute when Defoe’s miss-hit shot looped into the top corner of the net. Leeds kept their hopes of a Cup upset on the cards when Luciano Becchio (pr: Beck-ee-oh) converted a simple tap-in just before the break. But Defoe was in no mood to allow Leeds claim another FA Cup scalp for the season – he flicked-home David Bentley’s low-cross in the 73rd minute and then sealed the result in extra-time when he finished-off a rapid counter-attack. The win means that Spurs will now travel to face Bolton in the fifth round.
