New car sales for the first five months of this year have surpassed the total for the whole of 2009.

57 thousand new cars have been sold so far, despite targets at the beginning of the year which projected 70 thousand sales.

The Society of the Irish Motor Industry says the trend is due to the re-introduction of the scrappage scheme.
