Eamonn Lillis to be sentenced later

Feb 4th, 2010, 6:58 am

Eamonn Lillis is due to be sentenced today for the manslaughter of his wife Celine Cawley at their home in Dublin.

The 52 year old was cleared of her murder at Windgate Road, Howth on December 15th 2008 by a jury at the Central Criminal Court last Friday evening.

It was a Monday morning ten days before Christmas when Eamonn Lillis dialled 999 and lied to emergency services that his wife had been attacked by an intruder.

Gardai arrived to find Celine Cawley lying in a pool of blood on decking at the back of their Howth home, with a brick near her body.

The prosecution alleged the accused had struck her three times on the head with a brick but he gave evidence that most of her injuries resulted from a domestic row that turned violent.

Having heard details at trial of his extra-marital affair with masseuse Jean Treacy in the end the jury found by majority that the State had not proved intent to kill or cause serious harm.

The father of one is due to be sentenced for manslaughter at a hearing later today.
