Actor Mick Lally dies at 64

Actor Mick Lally has died.

The 64-year-old was best known for playing the character Miley in the hit soap ‘Glenroe’.

One of the greatest Irish actors of his generation his role in ‘Glenroe’ saw him welcomed into Irish homes every Sunday night for more than 18 years as ‘Miley Byrne’.

Actress Isobel Mahon worked with him on the soap.

“He’s an icon for the country – I can’t believe he’s gone” she said.

“It’s the man that I remember; and also kind of everything he represents” she added.

Born in Co. Mayo Mick Lally began his career as a teacher before going on to become an acclaimed stage actor.

He was a founding member of the Druid Theatre Company which worked closely with many Irish playwrights.

The father-of-3 passed away peacefully after a short stay in hospital.
