Enda Kenny has suffered a crushing blow with confirmation that the man whom he appointed as caretaker finance spokesman only 48 hours ago has pledged his support to Richard Bruton.
Kieran O’Donnell says he informed Mr. Kenny this morning that he felt the future of Fine Gael was best served by Deputy Bruton.
The fate of Enda Kenny now hangs on around a dozen TDs and Senators yet to declare where their loyalties lie.
Deputy O’Donnell says he is not being disloyal as Enda Kenny did not ask him to express confidence even when he asked him to take over Finance two days ago.
“We didn’t have that discussion – this discussion was purely about that Richard Bruton was no longer Finance Spokesman and I was effectively taking over the duties” he said.
“Enda asked me to takeover…the role in terms of Finance – Richard wasn’t there anymore and I took it up”.
“I think the issue really is in terms of the party going forward into the next general election – I think Richard Bruton is the man to lead us” he added.
