Haiti quake anniversary marked, as agencies continue work

Jul 12th, 2010, 10:20 am

It is 6 months to the day since a devastating earthquake hit Haiti killing almost 250,000 people.

Aid agencies are still struggling to deal with the hundreds of thousands of others whose homes were reduced to rubble.

An estimated 1.5 million people are still forced to live in unsuitable makeshift camps around the capital Port-au-Prince.

Tom Arnold from Concern says the relief effort will have to continue for years.

“The scale of the devastation that occurred in January is beyond anything I ever saw before” he said.

“And it’s going to need that level of commitment and dedication from Concern for the foreseeable future to help the Haitian people – who have shown such resilience in the face of such a terrible disaster” he added.
