Harney wants steady funding for Rape Crisis Centre

Jun 16th, 2010, 11:52 am

The number of first time callers to the national helpline of the Dublin Rape Crisis Centre national helpline almost doubled last year.

According to its annual report over 14,200 calls were received in 2009.

Of those, over 4,100 were from first time callers.

It follows the publication of the Ryan Report into the clerical and institutional abuse last May and the Murphy Report into the handling of clerical abuse in the Dublin Archdiocese last November.

Health Minister Mary Harney says she will do all she can to ensure the current level of funding for the service is maintained.

“I think at a time when the volume of activity is on the increase it would be foolish to reduce the level of funding to this organisation” she said.

“Indeed this organisation can provide many of the services that we need to provide on a national basis, such as the 24 hour helpline – and to be fair the organisation did get additional resources after the Ryan and Murphy Commission towards the provision of the helpline”.

“I want to see that continue” she added.
