'I expect Kenny to continue as leader', says Gormley

Jun 14th, 2010, 2:22 pm

The leader of the Green Party says he expects Enda Kenny to continue as leader of Fine Gael saying he has come out fighting.

It is understood the Fine Gael deputy leader Richard Bruton will challenge the leadership of deputy Kenny tomorrow.

So far the only member of the party’s frontbench team to openly back him is Louth TD Fergus O’Dowd.

While those supporting Kenny have been more vocal.

John Gormley says he has his doubts that Deputy Bruton would succeed if he decided to do so.

The Environment Minister says he does not understand the timing of the move.

“I don’t understand this as a political tactic point of view” he said.

“It seems to be quite stupid, frankly”.

“But that’s a matter for the Fine Gael party and I don’t wish to intrude into their particular territory”.

“It’s up to them to choose whoever the leader is, but….Mr. Kenny has come out fighting and I suspect he will continue as leader” he added.
