Juve edge-out Rovers

Aug 5th, 2010, 10:07 pm

It took a moment of magic from Alessandro del Piero for Juventus to finally see-off the challenge from Shamrock Rovers tonight in their Europa League qualifier in Italy. The Juve captain smashed-home a remarkable long-range free-kick in the 74th minute to hand the Italian giants a narrow 1-0 victory, which was enough for a 3-0 aggregate win. Rovers made the most of the heavy rainfall in Modena prior to the game to match their hosts during the opening-half. The visitors created the best goal-scoring opportunity of the first period when Stephen Rice narrowly missed-out on scoring an away goal when he just failed to connect with Dan Murray’s header. However, Juve went-on to dominate the second-half and del Piero’s strike was enough to see them safely through the play-off round.
