Mixed day for Irish in Barcelona

Its been a mixed for the Irish on day one of the European Championships in Barcelona. Earlier this morning Rob Heffernan just missed out on a medal after finishing fourth in the 20 k walk – Waterford’s Jamie Costin came 20th.

David Gillick won his heat of the 400 metres to book a place in the semi finals while Offalys Gordon Kennedy also qualified as a fastest loser but Dublins Brian Gregan missed out.

Michelle Carey, Justine Kinney and Brona Furlong all failed to make the next stage of the 400 meters hurdles.

There was also disappointment for Kelly Proper in the women’s long jump – she’s out of the competition after three foul jumps.
