More strikes hit Greece

May 20th, 2010, 10:15 am

Much of Greece is expected to grind to a halt again today, with the country’s trade unions staging another 24-hour general strike against planned cutbacks.

Many Greeks are angry with the spending cuts and tax and pension-age rises planned, in return for a €110 billion bail-out.

There are fears that violence will flare up again – just two weeks ago three people were killed during a protest in Athens.

Conor Elliot is an Irishman living in Athens; he says people there are afraid about what’s coming down the line.

“The cuts are really quite dramatic in terms of, not just public sector wages, but again cuts in the actual amounts of pension people will receive and also significant tax increases in the private sector” he said.

“So people are very afraid of what’s happening and the pace of what’s happening” he added.
