Murray and Williams both win in NY

Sep 1st, 2010, 10:25 pm

Andy Murray, Venus Williams and Ana Ivanovic were among the players to register convincing wins on day three of the US Open. Despite searing temperatures, the trio were able to advance in straight sets. Murray needed less than two hours to beat Slovakia’s Lukas Lacko and the fourth seed will now face Jamaica’s Dustin Brown in the second round. Williams is into the third round at the US Open after a straight-sets win over Canada’s Rebecca Marino. Williams was pushed all the way to a tie-break in the opening set by a spirited Marino, but the two-time champion went up a gear to cruise to the second set with ease. Former world number one Ivanovic said that she was starting to regain something close to her best form after defeating Chinese 21st seed Ji Zheng in convincing fashion. However, women’s tenth seed, Victoria Azarenka was forced to withdraw after she dramatically collapsed on court during the first set of her second-round match against Gisela Dulko.
