Niland wins in Israel

May 5th, 2010, 6:56 pm

Irish tennis player Conor Niland has advanced to the quarter finals of the Israel Open after a three sets win over the former world number five, Rainer Schuettler (pr: Rain-ee-ay Shutt-ler) from Germany. The Limerick man beat the third seed, and former Grand Slam finalist, on a scoreline of: 7-5, 4-6, 6-4. Niland will now go-on to face either the home favourite Harel Levy or American Alex Bogomolov Jr for a place in the semis. Schuettler has an impressive record at Grand Slams having reached the final of the 2003 Australian Open (where he was defeated by Andre Agassi) while in 2008 he reached the semi finals at Wimbledon, losing to the eventual champion Rafael Nadal. Niland is currently in the best form of his career and holds a career-high world ranking of 222.
