Republic of Ireland manager Giovanni Trapattoni wants to see how James McCarthy copes with the step-up to international level after naming the Wigan teenager in his squad for next week’s friendly against Brazil. The 19-year-old received his first call-up after a series of promising performances for the Latics, who he joined from Hamilton last summer. Trapattoni also selected another 19-year-old, Manchester City defender Greg Cunningham, and 22-year-old Portsmouth centre-back Marc Wilson for the first time, as Ireland prepare for their first match since losing out to France in their World Cup play-off. “He (McCarthy) can play right or left. I saw him two or three times,” said Trapattoni. “I wish to ask him which position he prefers because I cannot say. I think he can play behind the striker. It’s important we see his quality, his personality. He is fast and has good technique. It’s important I see him on the pitch, face to face.” Trapattoni is keen to take a closer look at all the new faces in his squad ahead of the start of the Euro 2012 qualifying campaign. “As I said in the past, in the future we need to look for the other potential players such as Cunningham, McCarthy and Wilson,” the Italian said. “Others in the future will also come with us. I wish to try them on the pitch but not immediately. In the game there’s a possibility we have the space (to introduce the newcomers), not immediately but in the game. We are curious to see them with us.” Trapattoni is eager for his players to put the frustration of losing to France behind them. Thierry Henry’s handball in the second leg, as he set up William Gallas for the goal which decided the tie, was painful at the time but the veteran Italian coach wants to move on. He said: “I look forward to working with my squad again after the disappointment of Paris. The priority now is to build on the progress made during the last campaign and prepare ourselves over the coming months mentally and tactically for an important Euro campaign.”
