Taoiseach Brian Cowen has described Gerry Ryan as a ” broadcaster of immense talent and popularity”, who’s legion of fans will all be greatly shocked.
Environement Minister John Gormley, and the Fine Gael Leader Enda Kenny have also issued statements paying tribute to the broadcaster.
Mr. Kenny said he brought a great spirit to his work and engendered huge loyalty in the legion of fans dedicated to him.
While the Green’s John Gormley said that his ability to take both the serious and light hearted stories was second to none – adding that his death was ‘a tragic loss for the viewers and listeners of Ireland’.
In a statement RTE said it learned of Gerry Ryan’s death with “profound sadness”, and said the thoughts and prayers of all its staff were with Gerry’s family and friends.
It also quoted the Ryan family as saying there were in “complete shock” and asking that their privacy be respected at this time.
