1 in 6 have suffered violence in relationships

Mar 2nd, 2010, 8:06 am

16% of people have experienced physical violence at the hands of a partner according to the latest Newstalk Nation survey.

The figures are contained in the first of a 3-part survey on violence in relationships, the family and society, which is being aired this week.

A total of 840 people took part in the survey which was carried out online between Fri 19th Feb and Fri 26th Feb 2010.

The poll also asked if the respondent themselves had ever been violent to a partner - 6% said Yes, 14% admitted coming close and 80% said they had never been violent to a partner.

Of those who did experience physical violence 69% said it didn’t end the relationship, whilst 31% said it did.

Only 8% told Gardai about the violent relationship while the majority (55%) told no one. A mere 1% told a support group, while 11% told a family member and 26% told a friend.

Newstalk also asked if respondents knew anyone in a violent relationship – 77% said they don’t while 23% said they do.. Of those who do only 39% said they have intervened.

The results will be broadcast in full on Newstalk 106-108 fm on Tuesday 2nd March, followed by the results on violence in society and violence in the family on Wednesday and Thursday
