Paper Review – Fri June 4th

Jun 4th, 2010, 10:05 am

Here is the Irish newspaper review for Friday June 4th…

The Irish Times leads with “Israel may ease Gaza blockade after contact with US”

It says Israeli ministers were last night expected to approve a proposal by Prime-Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, to ease the naval blockade on Gaza.  This comes as activists on board the Irish owned MV Rachel Corrie vowed to continue towards Gaza.

The lead in the Irish Independent is “Cowen fury over second expenses row Senator”

Taoiseach Brian Cowen is demanding an explanation from a second Fianna Fail Senator Larry Butler who gets paid €20,000 a year more in travel and accommodation expenses because he says he moved home to Carlow from Dublin.

The paper also tells us couples who have a happy marriage enjoy the added benefit of faster healing from cuts thanks to the so-called love hormone oxycotin which stimulates and sustains labour in late pregnancy.

The Irish Examiner reads “Callely isolated by party as probe launched”

The paper tells us Fianna Fail has moved to isolate Senator Ivor Callely after the Seanad watchdog committee turned up the heat on him and ordered an investigation into his €81,015 travel expenses.

The Irish Daily Mirror front page has the headline ‘Bloody revenge’

It says killer cabbie Derrick Bird went on a shooting spree to execute five people he believed were his enemies.  ‘

Yvonne snubs Ronan family holiday’ is the off lead.

The Irish Sun features John Coughlan, the Irishman who says Derrick Bird was a “Nice Guy” and was convinced cops had identified the wrong guy, saying he “ALWAYS had a smile on his face”.

It also tells us Grainne Seoige swears off fellas.  A source tells us “she won’t be seen on anyone’s arm”.

The Irish Daily Star runs with Derrick Bird too, claiming “Gunman blamed victims for his own rotten life”

It also tells of Simon Sexton, the paramedic who was killed in a fall from a moving ambulance in Cavan.

The Irish Daily Mail asks could “Callely face charges?”

The Senate’s own ethics committee says he is breaking the law reads the sub headline.

The paper also features Marian Keyes’ ‘secret battle to stay alive’
