The Irish Times front page says “VHI to be privatised in shake-up of health insurance”

The newspaper’s lead story says the Government is to invest up to €300m in the VHI and put the state-owner insurer onto the market in reforms of the health insurance sector announced yesterday.

The Irish Independent leads with “Premiums to rise as VHI is put up for sale”

The paper takes the line that hundreds now fear for their jobs as premium holders fear for hikes in prices as the decision is made to wean the VHI off state support.

The front-page picture is of Jennifer Stewart and Oliver Conroy who yesterday told a Medical Council hearing of the horrific moment in 2008 when doctors revealed to them that they’d accidently removed their young son’s healthy kidney and left him with his unhealthy one.

The Irish Examiner has the headline “Opposition Claims hike in premiums ‘inevitable’”

The paper also leads on the announcement about the sale of VHI. The government’s insistence that premiums shouldn’t rise is described as ‘wishful thinking’.

The front page picture is off what used to be – traffic crawling through Abbeyleix, and what will be – the Portlaois to Cullahill section of the M8 which completes the motorway network from Cork to Dublin and opens today.

The Mirror has the headline “House Of Horrors” on its front page

The paper says police in Northern Ireland fear children’s bodies are buried beneath a house close to the boarder and are seeking permission to demolish it.

The Sun has a picture of Ronan Keating in a swimming pool with the headline “Ronan Holiday”

The paper says the picture is from Thursday of last week and shows a worried Ronan before the news of his affair broke. The story goes on to say Simon Cowell has offered the Keatings his Barbados home to get away from it all.

The Star has the headline “Spanish Cops Target Fat Freddy”

The newspaper says gangsters Freddie Thompson and Gary Hutch are on a list of people Spanish police hope to question following the arrest of kingpin, Christy Kinahan.

The Irish Daily Mail leads with “Why Did Our Son Have The Wrong Kidney Removed?”

The paper focuses on that horrific story from Our Lady’s Hospital for sick Children in Dublin and the ongoing Medical Council hearing into the case.
