The Irish Independent’s front page says “FF turmoil at bungled moves to cut welfare”

The newspaper’s lead story says the senior government party is struggling to quell a backlash after cuts to welfare benefits for lone parents and the unemployed. The paper says Minister Eamon O’Cuiv bungled the announcement and overshadowed a major speech by the Taoiseach on the economy.

The Irish Times leads with “Ahern rules out granting asylum seekers the right to work”

The paper says the Minister for Justice, Dermot Ahern, has ruled out granting asylum seekers job permits or changing the direct payment scheme to them in a move that puts him at loggerheads with his government colleague, Mary White.

The Irish Examiner has the headline “Stud chief claims €67k in expenses”

The paper reports on an internal report of the Irish National Stud which says former Chief Executive, John Clarke accounted for 60% of the boards travel bill, or nearly €68,000, in 2008.

The Mirror has the headline “Driver Dies in 60FT Cliff Plunge” on its front page

The paper reports on an horrific car crash in Sligo in which a man in his 30s plunged to his death, watched on by day-trippers. He was one of seven to die on the roads over the weekend.

The Sun has the headline “Keith’s Affair Slur Fury”

The paper says Boyzone star, Keith Duffy, is to sue a Sunday newspaper that implied he bonked a top model.

The Star has the headline “If I Return Home I Will Be Arrested”

The newspaper says the only man questioned over the murder of notorious criminals The Westies says he’s afraid to come incase he’s arrested. Tony Armstrong was speaking in Spain.

The Irish Daily Mail leads with “Jab That Halts Breast Cancer”

The paper on scientist’s claims to have developed a breast cancer injection that stops tumours appearing and shrinks growths that are already present. The drug, which could go on trial next year, kills proteins essential for cancer to form.
