Paper Review – Thurs June 10th

Jun 10th, 2010, 9:51 am

Here is the Irish newspaper review for Thursday June 10th…

The Irish Times leads with Reports blame domestic factors for banking and economic crisis.  The subheadline is Cowen ‘regrets’ introducing fiscal policies.  It quotes the Honohan report as saying ‘Even before the failure of Lehman brothers…Anglo Irish Bank and Irish Nationwide Building Society were well on the road towards insolvency’.  It also tells us the HSE is to review misdiagnosed miscarriages in the last five years.

The Irish Independent goes with Cowen on rack over ‘homemade meltdown’.  It says the Government thought ‘the party could last forever’.  It also features a photo of Elaine Cunningham with her five year old son Sean.  She had been told Sean had no heartbeat in a pre-natal scan.  It also reveals serious gaps and deficiencies in the ultrasound screening services in maternity units were uncovered four years ago.

The Irish Examiner has the first in a special investigation on the first five years of the Health Service Executive.  It quotes HSE Chief Executive Brendan Drumm as saying the HSE ‘would be easier to run’ without childcare responsibilities.  It also tells us Cowen seeks to hide policies from bank probe, with the Government’s decisions from September 29th 2008 exempt from the commission of inquiry into the cause of the banking crisis.

The Irish Daily Mail tells us ‘Bank Crisis WAS Cowen’s fault’ referring to the Regling/Watson and Honohan reports, saying the Taoiseach tried to dupe us into thinking ‘the party could never end’.  It also has a photo of five year old Sean Cunningham with the headline ‘This is Sean and if it wasn’t for his mother’s instinct, he wouldn’t be alive today’

The Irish Daily Star also shows mother Elaine Cunningham and the scan that proved her son Sean was still alive.  ‘Shame’ is the headline and the papers tells us Medic told faulty scan mum that losing her baby was nature’s way of getting rid of the bad ones.  A front page comment piece also tells us ‘Cowen must go now!’, calling the Taoiseach a beaten docket and saying his political credibility is shot to pieces.

The Irish Sun leads with ‘Psycho Head Shop Horror’, telling us at least forty people were taken to hospital in just two weeks after they tried the new headshop high ‘whack’.

The Irish Daily Mirror with a photo of Irish football legend Paul McGrath reads ‘McGrath: I’ll beat booze demons’ following an alleged involvement in an assault in Wexford in April.  It also features Fiona O’Connell who believes doctors may have wrongly aborted her son’s unborn twin.
