We Look All Things African This Sunday

May 14th, 2010, 1:39 pm

The Wide Angle is focusing on all things African this Sunday as Africa Day celebrations are taking place in the Iveagh Gardens this Sunday from 12noon – 7pm.

A fun day out for all the family, the event hosts a great sample of African music, film, food, culture, history, art, social and political life.

Irish troops are in the process of withdrawal from the trouble-stricken nation of Chad. We will be talking to two members of the Irish armed forces who have recently returned from Chad to tell us about their experiences in the country.

Also, this summer the world’s attention is on South Africa as they host the FIFA World Cup. All the build up to the event has focused on the South African government’s ability to host it: are the facilities up to scratch? And will the many South Africans struggling in dire poverty reap the financial benefits the world cup brings to a country?

And we will have Congolese/Irish singer and guitarist Niwel Tsumbu  in the studio, who is performing at Africa Day, to tell us more about the event and also give us a sneak preview of the songs he will be playing.

Elsewhere, as the UK comes to terms with how a coalition government works, we ask whether David Cameron and Nick Clegg can prove their critics wrong and run a successful coalition?  And what are the implications for relations between the UK and Ireland as a result?

All this and more from 9am-11am this Sunday with Karen.
