A leading human rights group is calling on the government to decriminalise abortion on the grounds that the law here does not comply with human rights law.
Irish law currently states that women cannot have abortions here but can have access to information and travel abroad for terminations.
However, Human Rights Watch says that women are not getting the right information and that government is doing nothing to address this.
It’s calling on the government to address the issue of ‘rogue agencies’ who provide inaccurate information to women.
Marianne Mollman is spokesperson for Human Rights Watch.
“The government could do so much more to protect women’s health and rights” she said.
“So what we’re seeing here is basically a question of lack of access to information, lack of access to a possibility of making responsible and considered decisions about her health”.
“This is something that has been going on for 18 years since the 1992 referendum” she added.
