Around 2,000 men contacted a group which provides support to male victims of domestic abuse last year.
The figure is contained in the annual report for 2009 from AMEN.
As well as mental and physical abuse AMEN Manager Niamh McGrath says some women will not let their partners have any say in their domestic finances.
“We’ve a lot of calls from men who’s wives or partners have now taken control of the finances” she said.
“You’ve got men now at home on social welfare that hand over their money and they’re being allowed pocket money…per week”.
“They have no control or no say in anything that goes on financially in the house”.
“That’s another type of abuse – financial abuse” she added.
