Aftershock hits ravaged Haiti

Jan 20th, 2010, 4:30 pm

An earthquake measuring 6.5 on the Richter scale has shaken the border of Guatemala and Mexico.

Seismologists in Nicaragua say there is no immediate word of damage or injuries so far.

It comes just hours after a strong 6.1 magnitude aftershock hit Haiti.

Aid is beginning to get through to people left without food, water and shelter.

Newstalk’s Ger Gilroy is in the Haitian capital Port Au-Prince.

“If yesterday’s minute silence was a grim reminder of the massive death toll from last weeks earthquake, a huge aftershock this morning was a grim reminder that Haiti is still in peril” he said.

“Last night the prayers and songs were offered to keep the rain away, tonight will be to warn off the next aftershock”.

“So far, the extra damage has been hard to interpret – new damage looks old new damage. One thing is for sure, no one is going to be sleeping in-doors tonight”.

“Aid is beginning to flow; Concern, Trocaire, GOAL and others are getting into communities and empowering the local population to explain their precise needs”.

“Haven has confirmed they will build 10,000 new houses when all this is over.”

“The size of the generational task of rebuilding a country and a society is still unclear, but the smallest help is saving lives” he added.
