A 9-year-old child has been killed in a car crash in Leitrim.

The collision between a lorry and a car happened at around 9am this morning just outside Manorhamilton on the N16 Sligo to Enniskillen Road.

The boy was being brought to school by his mother when their car was involved in the crash.

The woman was injured and is being treated at Sligo General Hospital – her condition is not believed to be life threatening.

The road is closed for a technical examination and is likely to remain closed until around 4pm this afternoon.

Gardai are appealing for witnesses to the crash to come forward.
