Commissioner appoints Superintendent to investigate leak claims

Feb 24th, 2010, 4:35 pm

The Garda Commissioner has appointed a Chief Superintendent to investigate leaks and information which led to the resignations of Trevor Sargent and Willie O’Dea from government.

Deputy Sargent has today rubbished opposition claims that details of letters he wrote to gardai about a criminal prosecution involving a constituent, was leaked by Fianna Fail.

Labour had alleged it smacked of a revenge plot hatched by the senior government party – to get back at the Green party for the pressure they brought to bear on Willie O’Dea.

However, Deputy Sargent told Lunchtime here on Newstalk that is not the case, and the coalition parties are working well together.

“We have a very good relationship – it’s based on trust, it’s based on mutual interest of helping this country” he said.

“Obviously we’re separate parties, we’ve got separate individuals in them and we come from different origins”.

“That been said, we are focused on the interests of the country and putting aside those differences is what’s required when you’re in a coalition” he added.
