Daughter of mis-diagnosed woman waits to hear from hospital

Mar 12th, 2010, 10:00 am

A woman whose mother was diagnosed with bone cancer just a couple of months after being told she was suffering from ‘wear and tear’ says she feels robbed.

The woman, who wants to remain anonymous, is now waiting to hear if her mother’s case is one of the 58,000 whose X-rays weren’t read by a consultant radiologist at Tallaght hospital.

After her initial diagnosis of ‘wear and tear’ on her spine, the pain got worse and she collapsed – only to be diagnosed with extensive bone cancer.

She says the X-ray scandal should never have happened.

“What the important thing is is that people who are alive now, and that they get their test results back properly, that somebody checks them – so that they don’t have to go through what we did go through” she said.

“My mother would have died of cancer, I know that – and there was nothing in the end that we could do and there’s nothing we could do to bring her back now”.

“But there’s no way that something like this should happen, not on the scale that it did” she added.
